Job Description
Mō te tūranga | About the role The Museum is embarking on a series of building works and gallery renewals leading up to the celebration of the 100-year anniversary (in 2029) of the museum being in our current building on Pukekawa, the Auckland Domain. This role Conservator, Centenary Project will determine and implement an effective conservation approach in the planning and delivery of collection relocation and gallery decant project through preventive and remedial conservation to ensure safety and stability of objects during planned redevelopment works.
This role is responsible for:
Surveying the condition of collections being decanted from galleries
Contributing to the planning and prioritisation of gallery object decants and storage relocations
Undertaking conservation and stabilisation of objects
Documenting the treatment on database records
Noting which objects require further attention
Advising staff on the handling and safe packing of objects
Preparation of and packing of objects
Desired Skills and Experience
Ō pūmanawa | What you will bring
A degree in materials conservation with a minimum of two years conservation experience
Experience working in a team undertaking bulk packing and relocation of museum collection material
Up-to-date knowledge of current professional thinking around Preventive Conservation
Competency in Word, Excel and Collection Management Databases e.g. Vernon
An ability to effectively and constructively communicate conservation concerns
Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams
Experience working with Pacific and Māori cultural material
