Job Description
The Collection Manager, Pictorial is responsible for the expert management, cataloguing, physical/digital care and processing of the Museum’s photography and art collections. These collections span a range of formats and media: historic and contemporary photographic prints, negatives of all types, slides, moving image, paintings, drawings and prints. The Collection Manager, Pictorial’s work includes preservation management, digitisation and cataloguing of the pictorial collections, creating records for Collections Online and advising on and processing new acquisitions, as well as retrospective cataloguing. This role provides physical, digital and intellectual access to collections through retrievals, image requests, responding to enquiries and assists with the Museum’s loans, exhibitions, and public programmes as required.
Desired Skills and Experience
To be successful in this permanent and fulltime role, you will offer:
A recognised qualification, or degree in a field relevant to this position’s activities; or at least 3 years’ equivalent working experience in a special collection archive/library or GLAM sector
Experience in cataloguing a range of formats, with a strong interest in the history or process of photography
A familiarity with imaging software would be an advantage
A familiarity with collection management systems (Vernon preferred)
Experience in the handling and storage of heritage collections
Problem-solving skills, attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Ability to prioritise tasks and work collaboratively
An understanding of the principles and practice of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
