Job Description
Auckland Museum’s Summer Student Programme is open to promising undergraduate students from a range of disciplines. Students will join a cohort-style programme for ten weeks over the summer to gain career-relevant experience and have the opportunity to train alongside Museum professionals and to gain an insight into the culture and heritage sector. Our Summer Studentships provide an opportunity to undertake a project tailored to your interests and aspirations.
About the programme:
-Summer studentships will run over 10 weeks from 16 November 2026 to 12 February 2027 (with a 3-week break over the Christmas and New Year period)
-Cohort-style programme, with tours and talks from staff at Tāmaki Paenga Hira
- A wide-range of interesting and unique research projects
- A stipend of $7,000 will be awarded to each successfully selected student
Project Description:
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland Local and Natural Histories on Wikipedia
This project will train a cohort of Wikipedia interns to undertake the creation, editing and enhancement of Auckland local history pages on Wikipedia. This year one of the cohort will also be focused on Natural Science related topics, creating content related to Museum galleries and research on Pukekawa/Auckland Domain. These studentships are the result of Auckland Museum’s partnership with Wikimedia platforms to support open access projects and will contribute high-quality free knowledge and resources to the public, highlighting diverse and underrepresented histories. It is based on previous research the Museum has undertaken around the viability of Wikipedia as a learning resource and contributes to the work done as part of the Wikimedia Foundation Funded project, Understanding our past: using Wikipedia as a tool to support local history in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Desired Skills and Experience
This project will best suit a student with:
Research skills, using both online and library resources
An interest in public history or science communication and the local and natural histories of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland
Local history students: Ability to synthesise and summarise historical research and complex information into clear, concise writing for a general audience; Natural Science student: experience reading and producing scientific writing
While prior Wikipedia editing would be a plus, no previous experience is required, and full training will be provided over the course of the studentship
