Auckland War Memorial Museum: Connecting through sharing stories of people, lands and seas
Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland's identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections, developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events, educational programmes and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum's stories. We are Auckland's home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.
The Wikimedian in Residence will help make the knowledge held in Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum’s collections, research, and publications more visible, accessible, and reusable through Wikimedia platforms.
The role will support staff, researchers, volunteers, and community partners to improve Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and related open knowledge projects. Key responsibilities include organising community events and staff training sessions, creating and improving Wikipedia articles, supporting collaboration with Auckland GLAM institutions, and engaging with local, national, and international Wikimedia communities.
This fixed-term, full-time position is funded by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand and sits within the Collection Information and Access department, which is part of the Collections and Research directorate. This fixed-term role is required until late July 2027.
To be successful in this role, you will offer:
• Solid knowledge of the Wikimedia ecosystem, with demonstrable experience editing Wikipedia and communicating with other Wikimedians
• A good understanding of open knowledge principles, the Wikimedia movement and the activities and strategic motivations of the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand
• A degree or equivalent qualification, or relevant professional, community, or practice-based experience
• An understanding of the significance of Auckland Museum’s collections, research outputs, and role as a public knowledge institution
• Experience with, or a willingness to develop skills in, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, open licensing, and digital collections access
• Ability to organise and deliver training sessions, workshops, edit-a-thons, or community events for a range of participants
• Ability to manage projects and priorities and communicate outcomes to team members and internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
