Job Description

We are seeking an experienced professional to photograph the decant of our Māori and Pacific galleries as we refresh them ahead of the path to 2029 centenary project.

The position of Project Photographer, Centenary Project is primarily focused on using photography and other imaging techniques to improve the richness of object records within the decant project and to provide support to the wider photography team. The position will collaborate closely with the decant project team comprised of the Team Leader - Centenary Decant Project, Project Manager, Collection Special Projects, Conservators and Decant Specialists.

The Museum is a bicultural workplace and the person in this role will uphold the principles of He Korahi Māori and Teu Le Vā. This is a full-time and fixed term position running till the end of November 2026.

Desired Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will have the following knowledge, skills, competencies and experience in the following areas:

  • Tertiary qualification relevant to the sector, or a good level of relevant experience in image capture
  • Working as part of a team and communicating with wider teams within an organisation
  • Demonstrated experience in photography
  • Knowledge of photographic processes and digital file formats
  • Knowledge of museum collection management practice and collection care practice is desirable
  • Experience in meeting needs of Māori in relation to enquiries about taonga is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of tikanga Māori, especially relating to collections is highly desirable
  • Sound understanding of Mātauranga Māori
