Job Description

Mō te tūranga | About the role 

Auckland Museum is offering a rare opportunity for a Collection Manager, Taonga Māori, in a fixed-term role until late November 2025. This position involves the expert management, cataloguing, and care of the Museum’s taonga Māori collections. This busy role requires a highly organised individual to support the key objectives of the taonga Māori team. The role supports loans, exhibitions, and public programmes, and involves community access and engagement. Auckland Museum is committed to outstanding management of its extensive collections and the staff who tell the Museum’s stories. This position’s contribution is vital to enabling the wider Human History team to achieve its objectives that sit at the heart of the Museum’s aspirations. This position requires full-time hours.  

This role is responsible for: 

  • Triaging, planning and managing enquiries and tasks for the taonga Māori team, keeping them informed and ensuring all tasks are on track. 

  • Facilitating access/retrieval of collection items for internal and external stakeholders, including assisted viewings when required. 

  • Supporting the taonga Māori curators to research and provide prompt and accurate information to public and professional enquiries.  

  • Managing all new acquisitions from point of approval to cataloguing and storage.   

  • Ensuring the museum’s collection database information is consistent, accurate and retrievable, and enhancing records when appropriate.  

  • Registration of taonga and archaeological artefacts to meet the requirements of the Protected Objects Act. 

Desired Skills and Experience

Ō pūmanawa | What you will bring 

  • Outstanding administration, organisational, verbal, written and listening skills. 

  • Awareness, sound judgement, sensitivity, cultural competency and sound understanding of tikanga and mātauranga Māori. 

  • A tertiary qualification in a field relevant to this position’s activities or a tertiary Museum Studies qualification or at least 2 years’ equivalent working experience in a similar role.  

  • Knowledge and experience working with Māori collections and/or Māori communities.  

  • Fluency in Te Reo Māori is desirable. 

  • A familiarity with collection management systems (Vernon preferred) and experience in data management and maintenance.  

  • Helpful, flexible, respectful and generous approach with colleagues and external stakeholders. 

  • Attention to detail and demonstrated accountability.   

  • Full clean driver’s licence.
