Job Description

Join Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum as a Conservator in a pivotal full-time, fixed-term opportunity, offering a unique chance to contribute to the museum's future during an exciting time of change and renewal. This role comes at an important time as we embark on implementing our ambitious 5-year strategic plan, focusing on innovation, engagement, and the diversification of our modes of engagement to our collections.

You will be stepping in to cover for a valued team member on a career break, playing an important role in the physical care and conservation of our collections across Human History, Natural Sciences, and Documentary Heritage. This position offers the chance to work within a bicultural workplace committed to excellence and kaitiakitanga, upholding the principles of He Korahi Māori and Teu Le Vā.

To be successful in this fixed term role, you will offer:

  • A Tertiary qualification in the Conservation of Cultural Materials (essential) 
  • Member of NZCCM or internationally recognised Conservation affiliations
  • A minimum of 5 years conservation experience in museums or heritage institutions
  • Experience with material analysis using FTIR, XRF, Oddy testing, and Microfader testing among others
  • Experience treating a wide range of objects and materials
  • Experience in working with taonga Māori or other culturally sensitive material
  • Understanding of Mātauranga Māori as it applies to cultural heritage collections
  • A collaborative approach and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven effective oral and written communication skills
